Founded in 1997 and headquartered in San Diego, California, NuVasive®, Inc. is a medical device company dedicated to providing minimally disruptive surgical solutions for patients with spine disorders.

Traditional spine surgery entails large incisions, disruption of normal anatomy, and prolonged recovery time. Minimally disruptive surgical techniques are now available to effectively treat certain disorders, minimize trauma, and hasten recovery time.

NuVasive set out to revolutionize the minimally disruptive surgical market by focusing on the design, development, and marketing of products that minimize surgical trauma. The company is best known for its development of the XLIF® (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) procedure. Traditionally, surgeons access the spine from either the front or the back of the body. Accessing the spine using these approaches requires considerable manipulation and/or dissection of muscles and ligaments, which can cause lingering pain and prolong recovery. With the XLIF procedure, the spine is accessed from the side of the body in an attempt to minimize disruption to the tissue and musculature surrounding the spine. As a result, postoperative pain may often be reduced, which can contribute to a faster recovery.

In addition to XLIF, NuVasive has developed other minimally disruptive surgical procedures to treat various spinal disorders. NuVasive launched the ILIF™ procedure to overcome the potential shortcomings of standard lumbar spinal stenosis treatments using a minimally disruptive technique. More recently, NuVasive developed MAS® TLIF to allow for a less disruptive TLIF (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) without compromising the surgical access and ultimate surgical goals. Using NuVasive’s minimally disruptive technology, surgeons can perform conventional procedures with less tissue trauma, which may result in faster recovery and more positive surgical experiences for their patients.

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications, and benefits of minimally disruptive spine surgery with your doctor prior to receiving treatment and that you rely on your physician’s judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
