Are you planning a family gathering or barbecue? Be careful to not exacerbate any existing back injuries with these four tips:

Lift with your legs, not your back.

  • Hosting, or even attending a summer barbecue, can present a multitude of situations that can hurt your back. Whether you’re lifting a bag of charcoal, lawn chairs, or younger family members, make sure you bend and lift properly. Lift using your legs, not your back.

Take sitting breaks.

  • Whether you are grilling or just entertaining, it’s important to take a load off and sit. Make sure to not stand for hours on end without giving your body a chance to rest in a seated position.

Stretch before rigorous activity.

  • Planning on going swimming at all this summer? What about playing a pick-up softball game or going on a hike? Make sure to stretch before engaging in any physical activities, to help prevent injury.

SMILE!

  • The most important thing you can do is have fun and smile. A recent study suggests that smiling actually lowers the amount of pain you feel. Have fun with your family and friends, and don’t forget to smile.

They may seem simple, but following these four tips can pay off when it comes to the health of your back this summer.
