In the video below, two spine surgeons at the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC)  Health System in West Virginia discuss the benefits of the minimally disruptive XLIF  (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) procedure for back and leg pain.

According to Dr. John Orphanos, “The biggest advantage of the XLIF procedure is in the  approach. You can approach a spine many different ways, but coming at it from the side you can go through a smaller incision, and so there’s less muscle destruction. The muscles you go through are a very small layer and since they don’t provide a lot of the stability of the spine that you get when you go through the back, there’s a lot less pain involved postoperatively.”
