The Better Way Back® Patient Ambassador David has participated in several Patient Ambassador events at NuVasive corporate headquarters in San Diego. On May 18, though, he got to take a special tour of the NuVasive headquarters with his wife and some of their friends.

“I saw new technology that has developed just since my last tour in December,” said David. “My mind was totally blown. One can only wonder what the technology will look like a year from now.”

David’s tour included a demonstration of the eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF®) procedure, walking through the Biomechanical Research & Testing Lab, and observing a live XLIF training in the state-of-the-art operating room.

The tour started with a demonstration of the XLIF procedure in the Rotunda, a large atrium set up with different stations that exhibit NuVasive procedural solutions. The stations, designed for training visiting surgeons, include examples of the tools, technology, and implants that help to make procedures like XLIF both reproducible and predictable.

From there, the Director of Research & Testing walked the group through an on-site biomechanical testing lab where NuVasive implants are tested during the development process. Some of the tests take months to complete, depending on the number of cycles being run and the conditions that are being replicated in the lab.

After touring the lab, David and his guests got to step into the operating room to observe live training being conducted on a cadaver. The operating room technician talked the tour group through some of the steps of the procedure and answered questions about the XLIF procedure.

The tour wound down in the rotunda, where David learned about other NuVasive procedural solutions, including the new iGA platform.

“This was my third tour at NuVasive and each time I am amazed at the level of innovation,” said David.  “Everyone involved in the tour was knowledgeable, professional, and really made us feel welcome.”
